New Jersey Municipal Court Practice

This program covers the fundamentals of municipal court practice in New Jersey. Attorneys will learn about procedures in municipal court, common cases, ethics, and immigration consequences for defendants. Attendees will gain the understanding of how to conduct themselves in municipal court and how to avoid some of the common pitfalls. This program can be used toward the New Jersey newly admitted attorney requirement. Topics include:
Procedures
o Bail reform
o Pre-trial procedures
o Postponement requests
o Discovery and motions
o Negotiated plea agreements
o Trials and sentencing
o Post-conviction procedures

Cases
o Motor vehicle (DWI)
o Domestic violence
o Controlled dangerous substances
o Simple assault
o Shoplifting/disorderly persons

Immigration consequences

Ethics, courtroom etiquette, and professionalism

NJ CLE Information: This program has been approved by the Board on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court of New Jersey for 3.0 hours of total CLE credit. Of these, 1.2 qualify as hours of credit for ethics/professionalism, and 1.8 qualify as hours of credit toward certification in municipal court law. This program also qualifies for 1.8 NJ newly admitted credit in municipal court practice.
