The Nuts and Bolts of Representing Children in Special Education Matters

This program is designed to serve as a primer for attorneys interested in taking on pro bono representation of families in need of legal services in their education matter or attorneys interested in learning more about this area of law. It is designed for attorneys who have little to no experience representing children in special education matters.

Topics include:
• The Right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
• What You Need to Know About Educational Evaluations
• Overview of Individualized Education Programs (IEP’s)
• Other Substantive Education Rights
• Due Process Rights and Procedure
• Rights in Discipline Proceedings
• Attorney’s Fees in Special Education Matters
• Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

Co-sponsored by Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ), the Education Law Center, Disability Rights New Jersey and the Education and Health Law Clinic and Institute for Professional Education of Rutgers School of Law-Newark.

THE REGISTRATION FEE WILL BE WAIVED FOR ATTORNEYS WHO AGREE TO REPRESENT AT LEAST ONE CHILD THROUGH VLJ'S PRO BONO PROGRAM IN 2014. If you intend to volunteer, instead of paying in advance please bring your confirmation to the program and the fee waiver will be processed when you sign in.
