Family Law Cases Involving Domestic Violence and Guidelines for Attorney Professionalism

Three sitting family part judges and an experienced matrimonial attorney will discuss family law cases involving domestic violence ("DV") and challenges that can arise when handling such cases. Skills will be discussed to help enable practicing attorneys to more effectively represent domestic violence litigants. There will also be a discussion of professionalism towards colleagues, clients and the court.
Domestic Violence topics include: 1) Predicate acts for a DV complaint; 2) Leading DV cases; 3) Contempt of restraining orders; 4) Dismissal of restraining orders (NJ v. NY and PA); 5) Counsel fee awards; and 6) Recent changes in the DV statute.
Professionalism topics include: 1) Balancing family time, professional responsibilities and social commitments; 2) Being a great adversary; 3) Don't tell this to the judge; and 4) Baker's dozen of lame excuses.

NJ CLE Information: This program has been approved by the Board on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court of New Jersey for 3.1 hours of total CLE credit. Of these, 1.2 qualify as hours of credit for ethics/professionalism and 1.9 qualify as hours of credit toward certification in matrimonial law. This program also qualifies for 3.1 hours of credit for NJ family law practice for NJ newly admitted lawyers.
