Obtaining Post-Conviction Relief for Survivors of Human Trafficking

This program will provide an overview of the legal process for volunteer attorneys to assist survivors of human trafficking in vacating their criminal convictions that resulted from their victimization. Criminal records are often used against survivors, impacting employment, housing, family court matters and immigration. Under New Jersey’s Human Trafficking Prevention, Protection, and Treatment Act, survivors can petition to have their records cleared if they can show that their crimes arose from their victimization. Attendees will learn how file these petitions on behalf of survivors, thereby helping them to fully recover and move on with their lives.

• New Jersey’s Human Trafficking Prevention, Protection, and Treatment Act
• Doing the Work
o Interviewing and working with trauma survivors
o Preparing and Filing the Petition
o Collecting supporting documents
