Justice system involvement can exact devastating harms on children, including educational disruption and exclusion. The jurisdictional boundaries of juvenile court have profound implications for the school-to-prison pipeline and mass incarceration of youth. In New Jersey even a five-year-old child can be charged in juvenile court, children as young as fifteen are routinely prosecuted as adults, and juvenile court jurisdiction ends at age eighteen. This one day conference will bring together leading national experts in law, education, human development, and youth justice to explore these critical issues and potential strategies for reform.
