SEC v. Ripple: Are Digital Tokens Securities? (Zoom)
Wednesday, September 27, 2023 | 5:00 PM EDT - 6:00 PM EDT
This “fireside chat” with Ripple Labs general counsel Stuart Alderoty will focus on Ripple’s epic battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The case is a major testing ground for the SEC’s claim that it has jurisdiction over most cryptoassets. The SEC accused Ripple Labs, a blockchain developer and the creator of the XRP (“a digital asset that’s native to the XRP Ledger,” a blockchain), of selling XRP in an unregistered security offering. XRP’s market capitalization makes it an important asset in international crypto markets. The outcome of the court case against Ripple Labs raises crucial doctrinal issues and may have far-reaching consequences for blockchain-enabled markets and the crypto industry.
