Sports Betting in New Jersey and Beyond: States Hit the Jackpot with Murphy v. NCAA

Friday, November 30, 2018 | 9:00 AM EDT - 1:00 PM EDT
Gambling on the Internet is now legal in over 80 countries and generates over $30 billion a year in revenues, including about $6 billion from the United States, in spite of the limitations on such activity under the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA) 31 U.S.C. §§ 5361 et seq. This past spring and summer SCOTUS attacked this sports betting question on a larger scale. On May 14, 2018, in the landmark case of Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, the United States Supreme Court held that the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act ("PASPA") violated the Tenth Amendment's anti-commandeering rule. This decision has been widely perceived as giving all states a “green light” to legalize sports betting. Topics include:

• National and professional legal status of sports betting
• SCOTUS decision (Murphy v. NCAA) itself, and the legislative landscape of sports betting in New Jersey and elsewhere post-Murphy
• Consideration of what Congressional legislation could withstand scrutiny and what is likely to pass (or not pass)
• Online Gaming and Sports Betting
• What’s next in Sports Betting
• Sports Integrity
